NY, CA, KY to ban “Snacks, Seafood, Steak, Beer” from EBT Foodstamp programs

New York, Missouri, Kentucky, and California will soon prohibit steaks, seafood, beer and snacks from EBT Foodstamp programs.

One Missouri lawmaker is working to place more limits on the foods that may be purchased through the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

According to The Washington Post, some foods, such as steaks and seafood, are seen more as luxuries than necessities to be covered by tax payers. The proposed bill also bans the purchase of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks. The bill’s intention is to revert to using stamps for nutritional assistance.

What do you think about this idea?  Is it a good one or does it give the government too much control over what people eat?
